Arbeit Macht Frei (Poems about Lagos)

No, not Arbeit
That was
Auschwitz
and Dachau
and et cetera
where a globe-crazed Fuhrer
and his Teuton cohorts
to create
a super race
of blue-eyed
blond-crowned
six-feet
stiff-cocked
pure-breed
Aryans
sent six million
or who knows
more
to the horrors
of painful demise.

That was
Auschwitz
and Dachau
and et cetera.
This is
Lagos.

This is
Lagos
where the wide-eyed blind
and his cohorts
to create
a superduper
neverbeforeseenexceptinG8countries
Megacity
of corporatism
carefully
artfully
channeled
back home
and
a pervading semblance
(note: it’s a semblance)
of material wealth
have millions –
the have-nots –
trudging
grudgingly
along
mean
and miserly
streets;
have
millions
overwhelming
bus stops
awaiting
potty-mouthed
Messiah
Danfos
and Kekes
they’ll rush
for salvation
he who is left
let Hell take;
have
shanties
transformed
to mansions
(great, huh?)
for cronies
(there)
the poor
homeless
irrelevant
insignificant
left
to home himself
with the lost.

Is
superduper
Megacity
for
the man
of means alone?
(Hint:
question
has a good chance
of being rhetorical)

This is
Lagos.
Arbeit
did not
macht frei
at Auschwitz
and Dachau
and et cetera.
Megacity
will not
macht frei
liberate
here.

  1. I enjoyed reading this. Historically woven modernist poetry. Love it. So much questions it poses though. I have just one, will there be a part two when this Mega-insanity ends?

Have your say
